Management zone delineation guided by operational constraints

Zonage intra-parcellaire guidé par des contraintes opérationnelles

Résumé

In the context of precision agriculture,within-field zoning is a mean to manage within-field variability phenomenon that can appear in a cultivated plot. This process aims at dividing a given eld into a set of homogeneous and distinct regions. The purpose of zoning can vary : simplifying the within-field variability spatial representation, describing the field layout, or to give a simplified way to apply site-specifically a given preconisation. Some fields are more suitable for a zoning-based process : indeed, the use of zoning will be more convenient if the field presents an important and spatially-structured variability. The notion of opportunity defines, for a given field, the relative interest to apply zone-based management instead of the reference management,i.e. uniform management. It depends on the intrinsic characteristics of the elds, but also on the characteristics of the machinery used to apply technically this treatment. This study is devoted to the integration of those operationnal constraints into management zone delineation and into zoning opportunity computation. It is resulting of a string collaboration with Infoterra, a company involved in the production of remote sensing based decision support tools for agriculture. The zoning method we introduce is based on an image analysis tool, segmentation, that allows to consider both spatial and spectral relationships among pixels. A morphological segmentation algorithm is then adapted to the specificities of our data and constraints of our study (particulary those linked to our industrial context). A specific opportunity index is also introduced to estimate the performance of the proposed partition and the technical risks associated with the application of this partition with a given machine. Experiments have been led on theorical and real parcels : zoning and opportunity results are shown for different kind of variables, on continuous cover crops (broadacre cultures) as on discontinuous cover crops (grape)
